Remembering Hindi cinema's most endearing grand old man Avtar Kishan Hangal, on his 8th death anniversary.

Known for his uninhibited and totally natural acting, AKHangal was a highly acclaimed character actor in Hindi cinema.

What are your favorite films of his?

Avtar Kishan Hangal was born in 1914 and was a freedom fighter from 1929 onwards till India achieved Independence in 1947.

He then worked as a tailor & came to know actors like Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi, who encouraged him to enter the film industry at the age of 50!

With 225 films to his credit, and remembered for his roles in Sholay, Bawarchi, Namak Haram etc, AK Hangal was one of the well-known faces of Indian cinema.

However, he faced a major financial crisis after his successful stint in Bollywood. In his last days, he battled acute poverty and went bankrupt. Following a media spotlight on his condition, many fellow actors like Jaya Bachchan, Karan Johar, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan etc came to the rescue and helped him pay his dues.

But, his condition was so pathetic that he couldn’t even clear his medical bills, and in 2012 this legendary actor died a horrible death in a hospital without enough money to pay for his treatment!
